Why 3 way links are popular!

Ok, so I just talked about how reciprocal link popularity is almost dead. There is one way to still harness the power of reciprocal links, its call 3 way linking. This is considered a spam technique and I am writing about it to guide you against it. Eventually the Google algorithm will be able to determine these types of links.

The only way this seems to work is if the sites are compatible. The basic logic behind this technique is as follows.

Site 1 links to primary compatible site, site 3 who is not a part of the primary compatible site links back to site 1.

The only ways to be sure that the sites are counted separately:

1). Look at the class C IP range, are they in the same scope?
2). Are the domains owned by the same NIC Handle?
3). Do the sites cross link?

Answer yes to any of these and it will not work.

This is the basic explanation of this popular phenomenon.

My recommendation, always do things the right way! Head my warning, this is SPAM, be safe and just say no!

Right. BUT how do we explain when some sites show at #1 because of this trick. I know some sites in my industry which simply outperform others from last year because they are engaged in this 3-way link scam!! How do I know that?? They emalied me too for 3 way link. But I denied. Then I asked myself..Why don't I do the same. BUT I don't know...I just want to be on the safe side. I rather would like to be on 3rd page than get banned some day. But the truth remains...3 way links is working and those guys are paying fool with all search engines..Will they get caught?? I don't know..

There are lots of sites which show on top pages for this keyword"teak outdoor furniture" and I am sure that some of them are practising 3 way links..

Hi Aaron

You say what to be aware of when doing 3 way links - but you don't tell us why you consider this to be spam...
I wrote a little explanation myself on my blog (How 3 way links work) and I come to a very different conclusion: 3 way linking works very well, and I do it on sites that are quite well known to google, and I am having success with this method - not only short term but for almost 2 years now...

I have been in the search industry since the late 90’s, no not 10-20 years. My career started early in the search Day’s at Inktomi, where I supported large search portals. For example, MSN, AOL, iWon, Hotbot, CNet too name a few. After Inktomi I became a freelance consultant. I consulted for a few of the Top SEO’s around 2002 time frame; obviously the market has changed since then. After consulting I joined a small SEO firm called SEO Inc as the CTO. At SEO Inc. I successfully optimized some of the largest clients including IGN, Sony, VEGAS.com, Beaches and Sandals Resorts to name a few. Even though SEO Inc was a ton of fun, I still wanted the ultimate SEO challenge. I moved on as the global head of SEO for Shopping.com an eBay company. This challenge was an interesting one, how do I optimize a site with 50 million products? Every month I helped the business grow by leaps and bounds. I am now consulting for mostly enterprise e-commerce clients. Yes there is more too me than this profile shows, but you will just have to ask.
