Why is my competitor ranking for that keyword?

Here are a few simple tips when trying to understand why your competitors rank for certain keywords. This methodology will work for smaller sites, but if you have a site with thousands of pages different types of research is necessary.

1). Identify the keyword – For this test I am going to randomly choose an interesting keyword. Let’s try Laptop Bags

2). Now we need to understand why the results are showing the way they are. A great tool for this is, Jim Boykin’s Cool SEO Tool.

3). After looking at age and basic links, I like to understand how many of the pages in the top sites have results for the keyword. In this case I found the following.

#1 and #2 results www.tombihn.com had 65 matches to site:www.tombihn.com laptop bags
#3 and #4 results www.timbuk2.com had 3 whole matches to site:www.timbuk2.com laptop bags
#5 and #6 results mobileoffice.about.com had 7,040 matches to site:mobileoffice.about.com laptop bags
#7 and #8 results www.computerbags.com had 2 matches to site:www.computerbags.com laptop bags

www.tombihn.com had 478 inbound links to its main page
www.timbuk2.com had 593 links to its main page
mobileoffice.about.com/od/packingyourmobilegear/
tp/womensbags.htm had 241 links pointing to it
www.computerbags.com had 19 links pointing to it

www.tombihn.com was registered in 1996
www.timbuk2.com was registered in 1996
www.about.com was registered in 1996
www.computerbags.com was registered in 1999

www.tombihn.com 0 direct matches on page, however several matches for Laptop separate from Bags
www.timbuk2.com 0 direct matches on page, however several matches for Laptop separate from Bags
www.about.com Had so many matches it was hard to count
www.computerbags.com 6

I decided to grab the 95th result to see why they are not ranking and this is what I found www.everki.com

Site had 551 matches for a site:www.everki.com laptop bags – Most of the results where supplemental
Site was registered in 2005
Site had 2 instances of Laptop Bags and a scattered result of Laptop separate from Bags
Site had only 19 links in which only 9 of them where from outside sources.

This site most likely only needs to do some serious PR efforts and if it spent time trying to grow its links from the outside world I think it can rank.

How do you look at competitors when you are trying to rank your site?

I have been in the search industry since the late 90’s, no not 10-20 years. My career started early in the search Day’s at Inktomi, where I supported large search portals. For example, MSN, AOL, iWon, Hotbot, CNet too name a few. After Inktomi I became a freelance consultant. I consulted for a few of the Top SEO’s around 2002 time frame; obviously the market has changed since then. After consulting I joined a small SEO firm called SEO Inc as the CTO. At SEO Inc. I successfully optimized some of the largest clients including IGN, Sony, VEGAS.com, Beaches and Sandals Resorts to name a few. Even though SEO Inc was a ton of fun, I still wanted the ultimate SEO challenge. I moved on as the global head of SEO for Shopping.com an eBay company. This challenge was an interesting one, how do I optimize a site with 50 million products? Every month I helped the business grow by leaps and bounds. I am now consulting for mostly enterprise e-commerce clients. Yes there is more too me than this profile shows, but you will just have to ask.
