The answer to scoring is a complex arrangement of algorithms using multiple factors. But in laymen’s terms, there are a few simple things the search engines look at to build a score.
1) Keyword repetition, prominence and density. How often does it appear? How close is it to the top of the page? Are the words large and attractive?
2) What is the name of the page? Is it close to the keywords you are writing for? Title=”My Brands Page” does not cut it.
3) Within the site, how far do I have to click to get to the page?
4) How many RELATED pages in my site link to this page? Not just in the navigation.
5) How many RELATED pages off my site link to this page? Not all from one domain either.
These are a few simple factors to look at when trying to understand why your page does not rank. Of course there are quite a few other steps to take to make sure you are doing well.
1) How new is the site?
2) Are you targeting a market that is completely flooded with no new information?
3) How much of your content is duplicated from other sites? Or even from on your own site?
Larger company’s need to ask themselves these questions. Is your site easily crawled?
Below is a short list of questions you need to answer.
1) How dynamic are your URL’s? Do they contain a tremendous amount of values or attributes? Do you use session ids instead of cookies to track users?
2) How fast are your servers?
3) How much of your ISP’s PIPE do you have?
4) Are you load balancing? If so can you see it in your URL’s?
