PR on Google Toolbar

Matt Cutts just posted about a Google Toolbar Snapshot Refresh happening on Friday. I think this is a great time to remind people that the data shown on the Toolbar is a representation of what Google is really using.

An ounce of knowledge can be a very dangerous thing. I get questions for webmasters constantly that sound like this: Should I be worried that a PR-0 page is linking to me? Of-course not, unless the site contains content that is a complete miss match to your business. Exchanging links with other sites for purely link value is one example of a bad idea.

Is the page really a PR-0? Not likely, it’s usually an indication of a brand new page. Thus the snapshot that Google is showing in the Toolbar is simply non-calculated data.

An alternative to see if the page has value, find out what the page is about and see if they are ranking for it. This is a simple way to test quality.
